Surgical Co-Management
in Washington, D.C., Chevy Chase, MD, & Arlington, VA
If your eyes need LASIK, PRK, or surgery for glaucoma or cataracts, have your procedure co-managed by your trusted, independently owned eye care team at Washington Eye Doctors.
What Are Eye Surgeries?
Eye surgeries are performed for a variety of reasons, but a few of the most common include “refractive surgeries” to fix refractive errors, vision issues where the eye can’t properly focus light on the retina. These include nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), presbyopia, and astigmatism, and are often correctable via surgery. We’re proud to offer custom, curated eyewear to correct these conditions, but some people prefer the freedom that can come with LASIK or PRK procedures.
Surgery is also sometimes performed for glaucoma, where the eye develops high intraocular pressure (IOP) that can damage your eye’s optic nerve. This can lead to irreparable vision loss, usually before you even notice symptoms, making early detection and quick responses crucial. For cataracts, we can use eyewear to adapt to your changing sight, but surgery is the only option to rid you of this condition. Cataracts will progress until your eye’s lens is completely clouded unless this lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).
How Does Surgical Co-Management Work?
Our talented optometrists can identify any potential issues with glaucoma, cataracts, or refractive errors during a comprehensive eye exam. Then, we’ll refer you to one of our trusted surgeons and ensure they have a complete understanding of your medical history and vision needs. Our friendly staff will also follow up with you after your surgery to make sure your recovery goes smoothly and that your eyesight is secure.
Eye Surgery Options
There are a few different procedures that can correct glaucoma, fix refractive errors, or enhance your vision. For refractive surgeries, we work with some of the area’s top surgeons to offer two of the most common and trusted treatments, LASIK and PRK. If you have cataracts, we can connect you to trusted ophthalmologists who are highly skilled in cataract surgery. We also team with some of the area’s foremost glaucoma specialists to navigate any potential surgeries due to complications from the disease.
Lasik
LASIK can correct myopia, hyperopia, and some forms of astigmatism. The procedure involves creating a small incision in the cornea, lifting it up, and using a laser to gently reshape the eye’s curvature. LASIK is pain-free and requires little downtime.
PRK
This surgery is an excellent option for patients who have thinner corneas or dry eye disease. PRK involves removing the top part of the cornea and then using a laser to reshape it. This procedure can also reduce your need for glasses and contacts.
Glaucoma Surgery
& MIGS
This serious eye disease is commonly known as “the silent thief of sight” because you often won’t notice its symptoms until it’s too late. Our team can identify signs of glaucoma during a comprehensive eye exam and help co-manage any necessary surgeries, including minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS).
Cataract Surgery
Since there is no “cure” for cataracts, surgery is the only ultimate way to return you to clear sight. This procedure involves removing your eye’s cloudy lens and replacing it with an IOL. We’re experienced in co-managing cataract surgery and following up to monitor your vision.
